Associate Professor of School of Life Sciences Invented High-Performance New Technology for Bacterial Detection

Among all currently available point-of-care testing (POCT) methods, Immuno Chromatographic Assay (ICA) is the most mature one, which has found wide application in rapid screening of biochemical molecules, including antibody, biomarker, virus and so on. However, in detection of larger microorganisms such as bacteria and fungus, this method has some inherent defects, namely low sensitivity and limited quantitative ability, so that it would be incompetent for ultrasensitive qualification of pathogenic bacteria in complex environment.

Recently, Dr. Wang Chongwen, an associate professor of School of Life Sciences, developed a novel two-dimensional graphene oxide-fluorescent nanoprobe, which could stick tightly to the surface of the target bacteria and then was captured by the test zone of the ICA strip to generate strong fluorescence signal. Under optimal conditions, the biosensor developed with this technology ensured simultaneous and sensitive detection of Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in one test within 20 minutes, and the detection limit reached 13 and 20 cells/mL for S. pneumoniae and S. aureus, respectively. Thus, this technology has a wide field of application with good prospects. The study was published in Chemical Engineering Journal, one of the top journals in chemical engineering. Cheng Xiaodan, Zheng Shuai and Wang Wenqi, three graduate students of our university, are co-first authors, while Wang Chongwen and Prof. Wang Shengqi, chief scientist of the Academy of Military Sciences, are co-corresponding authors.

Since joining our university as a high-level talent in 2018, associate professor Wang Chongwen, with the support of our school and university, has made a series of scientific research achievements in collaboration with Key Laboratory of New Technology for Molecular Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases, Military Medical Science Academy of the PLA. As the first or corresponding author, he has published 28 papers in established SCI journals such as Biosens Bioelectron, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering Journal, ACS Appl. Mater. Interfaces, Food Chemistry, Sens. Actuators B-Chem (20 papers published in the first-grade journals ranked by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 6 papers with an Impact Factor higher than 10, and 3 highly cited papers of ESI).
